Title:  SIGNS

“Sign, sign, everywhere a sign
Blockin’ out the scenery, breakin’ my mind
Do this, don’t do that
Can’t you read the sign?”
– Five Man Electrical Band – 1971

In life there are signs of all kinds
do we know how to read them?
or do we let them pass us by?
There are road signs, life signs, little nagging feelings that I need
to be doing something else
That I need to make a change and go in a different direction.

But that direction, that change is so hard to imagine
the road less taken is not so easy to follow
if only I had some type of actual physical sign
a sign I could read that would lead me
where I want to go.

The other day my wife and I were out driving around and happened to find ourselves out on a country road and the sign that we approached said
“Bridge Out. Turn Around”

We chose to let that sign pass us by because the road in front of us looked perfectly fine. It was paved and smooth and gave no illusion that it wasn’t in anyway complete. So we drove with no fear until we had to retreat.
“Oh. The bridge is out.” we said.

Then we turned around and ask our GPS to re-route us and eventually got to where we needed to be.

Road signs are sometimes right and sometimes wrong …. so we in our minds can easily let them pass us by. You know the road signs that say “Guardrail Damage ahead” but you never ever see any damage. Or “No Center Stripe” and clearly there is a center stripe.

Then the time comes when you realize that I should have followed that road sign … that sign that said STOP … because now I am in a place that I don’t want to be.

Signs that are given to us from Life are an entirely different matter. We all get them, but how many do we let pass us by?
Is it fear that lets us ignore them so easily?
or have we gotten so good at ignoring the voice in our Life because
we think that over time it will eventually go away?
Does the voice really go away or do our dreams just die?

I received a sign from Life a little over a year ago. That sign …. that voice said you need to join Toastmasters. I had heard about Toastmaster from a podcast that I listen too called The School of Greatness. The host of the podcast shared a small blurb about joining Toastmasters and how it really helped to change him and helped him to take the next steps in life. Right after that revelation from the host, I was prompted to go so far as to look up Toastmaster groups in my area and found The Top of Texas on the first try. I chose to ignore the sign I had been given for over a YEAR. In my case the sign never went away …. it was unrelenting until I relented and came to my first meeting.

I have no idea why I chose to finally read this sign and follow it but I am thankful that I did.
It is leading me so far outside my comfort zone that I am beginning to form
new aspects of myself and my old self is becoming less and less
of what it was and more and more of what it should be.

Maybe following this unknown road will somehow lead me to the
second career that I am seeking.
Maybe listening to Life in this case will help me
achieve things that I never knew I could achieve.
Maybe dreams will be fulfilled.

I have no idea why we ignore signs of all kinds
but maybe going forward today we can all change
how we read the signs and not only
how we read them but how we welcome them in our lives.
Sure you may be taken down a road that is not smooth or one that you think you were not cut out to follow
But couldn’t not following the signs lead you down that very same road?

“Sign, sign, everywhere a sign
Blockin’ out the scenery, breakin’ my mind
Do this, don’t do that
Can’t you read the sign?”

Maybe today is the day
You start reading the signs
and let them take you
where life may.
